William Henry Powell Jr., 93 of Shepherdsville, returned to his Heavenly Father May 2, 2019. He was born August 7, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Shepherdsville. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 during World War II and was commissioned an Ensign, USNR and served on 2 aircraft carriers. After the war, he finished his educational pursuits with a B.A. from Howard College (now Samford University) and then moved to Kentucky where he received a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served for 5 years as pastor of Little Flock Baptist Church in Bullitt County. He entered a teaching career serving as an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the University of Louisville for 35 years, as a teacher of math and physics at Shepherdsville High School for 12 years, at Bullitt Central High School for 14 years, at Fort Knox high school for 6 years and Evangel Christian School for 6 years. “Mr. Henry” was a devout Christian who impacted a multitude of people through his ministry and teaching. He instilled a love and appreciation of math in his students and most importantly a love of the Lord to those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Anne Marie Powell and his wife, Mary Sue Powell.
He is survived by his son, Henry Arnold “Hap” Powell of Shepherdsville, and grandson Brandon Henry Powell.
The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Shepherdsville on Monday May 6, 2019 at Noon, with Pastor Adam Smith officiating. Burial will follow Highland Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be Sunday 3pm – 6pm at Maraman Billings Funeral Home, and at First Baptist Church of Shepherdsville located at 254 S. Buckman Street, Monday from 10am until the time of service.
