With sadness, we announce that Patricia Ann Barger Crigler (82) of Shepherdsville passed away peacefully on January 14, 2024, at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville, Kentucky, where she resided for the past five years.
Patricia, affectionately called "Patsy," was known to all her friends and caregivers at the Episcopal home as "Miss Shepherdsville." As a lifelong resident who grew up strolling downtown with her friends, Patsy was proud of her family and town. She never tired of talking about "going home to Shepherdsville."
Patsy was born on December 20, 1941 in Louisville, Kentucky. Though born to Samuel R. Barger and Bonnie Clarice Secrest Barger, she was raised by her beloved grandfather, Forrest Lee (Pop) Barger, her grandmother, Sarah Fern Barger, and grew up with her beloved aunt, Jean Barger Hatzell. From an early age, Patsy developed a strong work ethic by helping out at Barger's Restaurant, the family business located on South Buckman Street. Patsy had a lifelong dedication and love for her family. Though Alzheimer's disease had taken so much from her, she would still ask people if they had seen "Pop" today and she always wondered what he was doing.
Patsy graduated from Shepherdsville High School, where she formed lifelong friendships. She was a people person who loved to laugh, talk, and have fun and was a member of the school's cheerleading team.
After high school, she attended Louisville Beauty School and, upon graduation, worked as a hairdresser with Beulah Maraman at the original Breezeway Beauty Salon in Shepherdsville.
In September 1961, Patsy married Samuel John Crigler, known as "Sam". They left Shepherdsville and resided in Augusta, Georgia, during Sam's military service. Upon return, Sam resumed employment at James B. Beam Distillery. Eventually, Patsy opened her own beauty shop, which she called "Pat's Hairstyling and Tinting." She had her shop for many years and had many loyal customers.
Patsy was a loyal caregiver to her family. Patsy adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was always passionate about supporting them with any need or dream they had. She spent much time caring for her aging grandparents in their older years, her two granddaughters during their early childhood, and, in later years, her beloved aunt Jean.
In her free time, Patsy had many hobbies and interests. She was a dedicated seamstress, passionate about sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She loved painting and many creative projects. Patsy found joy in cooking and loved hosting friends and family. She loved animals; they had been an integral part of her family since childhood, providing her companionship and unconditional love. Her black Labrador retriever, Murphy Lee, was her last pet, and a framed picture of him remained in her room until she died.
If you knew her, you knew better than to call her between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. because that is when she watched the "Young and the Restless." Victor Newman was her favorite. She loved her afternoon TV, and even at the Episcopal home, she controlled the TV remote until she could no longer process or enjoy the show.
Patsy was a Christian and attended Davidson Memorial Church in Shepherdsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J. Crigler, her beloved brother, Morris Lee Barger, her parents, grandparents, and her dear aunt, Jean Hatzell.
Patsy is survived by her daughter Paula Crigler Gibson (Gary Gibson) and her son, Stephen Lee Crigler, both of Shepherdsville, her granddaughters Lindsey Gibson Williams (Andrew M. Williams) of Jupiter, FL, and Stephanie Lee Crigler (Matt Nofsinger) of Chicago, IL, and her great-grandchildren, Henry James Williams and Hadley (Hattie) Williams, of Jupiter, FL, all of whom she dearly loved.
The family would like to thank those individuals they could not have done without. Thanks to Sheila Willis Thigpen, Natalie Hodge and Linda Ferguson. Patsy thought they were always visiting, though they were helping care for her at home.
Our deepest appreciation goes out to the entire team at the Episcopal Church Home, where better care could not have been received. We are incredibly grateful to Tundie, Brandy, Angela, Lisa, Katie, and Cheryl who treated Patsy as a friend and offered her compassion and dignity daily. Thanks to Hosparus, especially Christina and Karen, and many other dedicated caregivers who supported Patsy and her family.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Maraman Billings Funeral Home, 605 South Preston Highway, Shepherdsville, Ky.
Friends may visit that day from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m., with burial to follow in Hebron Cemetery.
