STEWART, MARVIN FRANKLIN, JR., 80, of Shepherdsville, Kentucky died Thursday, February 26, 2015, following an eight year battle with cancer. A native of Taylorsville, Marvin was born September 2, 1934 to the late Cora Ellen (Darnell) and Marvin Franklin Stewart, Sr. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 57 years, Janice Ellen (Greer), whom he often referred to as “the best woman in the world”; his vibrant daughter, Nan-Ellen Roosa (Dr. Stephen A.), who made him laugh loudly and laugh often, and of whom he was so very proud; and his breathtaking granddaughter, Maryelle Suzanna Roosa, a special gift from God who brought him immeasurable peace and joy, and whom he adored. He was also the father of the late Michael Greer Stewart.
After graduating from Taylorsville High School at the age of 16, Marvin received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, followed by his Master’s and post-graduate degrees in Counseling and School Administration respectively, from Eastern Kentucky University. Additionally, Marvin served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for eight years.
Dedicating his life’s work to serving children, youth, and young adults, Mr. Stewart leaves an unforgettable legacy, helping to mold the lives of countless thousands of students across Ohio and Kentucky. Enjoying every day of his career in Education spanning 38+ years, Mr. Stewart began in 1954 at Brown County High School, Piqua, Ohio where he served as a teacher of Biology and Health; and as Head Coach for basketball, baseball, and track. Over the course of the next 12 years, he served as a teacher of Biology, Health, Science, Math, Physical Education, and Driver’s Training; and Head Coach for basketball, baseball, and track at Hardin-Houston High School in Sidney, Ohio. During his nine years as Head Basketball Coach, Mr. Stewart was named Coach of the Year, and the most winning Coach in the school’s 87 year history. Also, during this time, Mr. Stewart served as a Professor for Spalding University, teaching Logic and Ethics. Returning to Kentucky in 1968, he served as Principal for Lebanon Junction Elementary and High Schools. The following year, he was selected to open Bullitt Central High School, the first consolidated school serving all high school students in Bullitt County, where he served as Assistant Principal & Athletic Director. In 1978, he became Principal for Brooks Elementary School until 1989 when he and Jan retired. Even in retirement Mr. Stewart served in Interim Administrative positions for Bullitt County Public Schools’ Hebron Middle, Roby and Brooks Elementary Schools; as well as a Mentor to Central Office Administrators. Additionally, Mr. Stewart served as an Administrative Consultant to Spencer County Elementary School. Marvin was a faithful and committed member of the First Baptist Church, Shepherdsville for 47 years, during which time he served as Chairman of the Deacons, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher to Youth, Church Moderator for over 25 years, and Active Deacon until his death.
An avid golfer, Marvin’s love of the game was evident as he frequented the golf course most days, chasing the little white ball for 27 holes with his host of golfing buddies from around the world. He embraced every aspect of the game with the same competitive spirit that he held for his Kentucky Wildcats and New York Yankees. Marvin was also a Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Stewart fought cancer and death with the same tenacity that he lived all aspects of his life, with his motto, “Never give up! There’s always hope!”
