October 27, 1938 — March 9, 2023

Wayne Edwin Shafer, 84 of Taylorsville passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital.
Wayne was a Christian by faith, a Mason, and a retired auto worker from Ford Motor. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran that was involved with several veterans’ groups and a member of Vietnam Veterans of America. Wayne played a vital role in helping establish veterans’ cemeteries across Kentucky. With what started as just a letter to “Dear Abby,” Wayne was directly responsible for creating the reunion of the USS Salute AM-294. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva Shafer; his son, Scott Shafer; his siblings, Fred Shafer, Jo Ann Allen, Jack Shafer, and Ralph Shafer.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Carole Shafer; his sons, John Shafer (Belinda) and Cory Shafer; his sister, Phyllis Rutledge; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Addison, and Ryan Shafer.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Maraman Billings Funeral Home, with Pastor Gary Mcgaha officiating.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Military Honors and burial will be held at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.
